Poultry & Chicken Feeders
Stromberg’s Chickens strives to provide our customers with an extensive selection of poultry, bird, and chicken feeders that make poultry farming more convenient. But don’t just take our word for it—look out for the available feeders and waterers that promote excellent health and cater to the well-being of your flock!
Finding the Right Feeder for Your Birds
Choose small feeders you can hang securely for flying birds, such as quail and pigeons, or standing feeding devices for chickens, ducks, and turkeys. Rather than buy a feeder and try to rig it to work for another type of bird, check out our selection of hanging feeders and ground feeders.
Types of Chicken Feeders
At Stromberg’s Chickens, we serve all sizes of hatcheries and farms. Our vast selection of chicken feeder options includes designs for the following:
- Small coops
- Large coops
- Free-range chickens
- Hatcheries
Whether you need chick feeders, poultry feeders, or range feeders for your game birds, our selection offers feeders to suit the needs of your birds.
Place small feeders in a coop to feed a group of chickens at once. Choose a large, nearly two-foot-tall, free-standing feeder to accommodate many chickens in the yard. You can also opt to bolt the galvanized steel design to a wall.
Other Considerations for Choosing the Right Chicken Feeders
Whether you’re buying a feeder for your birds, your first thought might be to prevent waste. When that is true, feeders also help control portion sizes and help you monitor the well-being and health of your chickens.
Some of the feeders you’ll find in our selection can help regulate the amount of food your birds consume, ensuring a proper feeding regimen. As a result, your chicken will get a healthy diet by consuming the right amount of feed.
Our plastic and metal feeders can also help prevent your birds from overfeeding, which can lead to problems such as liver disease from fat or obesity. Such health issues cause mobility and pressure sores, and your chickens may become egg-bound.
When chickens are allowed to graze freely on scattered food, they tend to waste a lot of it by tossing it around or picking out their favorite bits. They’ll leave you with a mess in your coop or yard, attracting rodents or other unattractive pests. Our feeders ensure your birds are well-fed without unnecessary waste.
What Is the Best Kind of Chicken Feeder for my Birds?
Choosing the right feeder depends on several factors: flock size, presence of other animals, and budget. Consider the following to ensure you purchase a quality product that serves your needs.
Flock Size
Consider the size of your flock. How much food do they need in a day? If it’s a large one, your feeder must be able to hold a lot of food so as not to require frequent refills.
Presence of other animals
Where are you putting your feeder? Are there rodents or wild birds? Then your best option will be to purchase an automatic feeder to keep pests away.
Budget
Some feeders may be expensive, while others are affordable. Which one will you be willing to spend your money on? Going for the cheaper ones means missing out on any additional features the expensive ones might offer, so choose wisely based on your needs.
How Big Should a Chicken Feeder Be?
Your feeder should be big enough to hold feed that will last your chickens 1 to 2 days. The size of your feeders or waterers also depends on your specific situation, including the size of your flock. However, it shouldn’t be so big that it takes up all your space. Neither should it be challenging to handle.
For a flock of 50 birds, go for a feeder that can hold at least 50 lb to 75 lb of food. To ensure each chicken is getting fed, you might want to have 2 to 3 feeders, each holding 25 lb to 35 lb.
If you have 2 to 4 birds, you can use a metal feeder, perfect for ground-feeding birds. If you have chicks, you can use a long metallic trough chick feeder, allowing room for every chick.
Additionally, consider having a treadle or automatic feeder that will help dispense the food when the treadle is stepped on, preventing waste from pests and damage from weather.
Should I Put the Feeder in the Coop or Run?
Your birds should be able to access the feeder without competing for food. Therefore, the location of your feeder will come down to what works best for your chicken. You can experiment with different backgrounds.
Your location will also depend on the choice of your feeder. If you have an automatic feeder that provides feed when the treadle is stepped on, you can place it inside a coop. This way, your chicken gets control over when they eat, and at the same time, you’ll help reduce the risk of pests getting into the feeder.
Consider the behavior of your chickens. If they’re messy eaters, a run may be your best location. Some poultry feeders, such as automatic feeders, come with a pedal or treadle mechanism that is stepped on to provide feed, which prevents waste from pests and protects the feed from moisture and weather.
Whether you choose to put your feeder in a coop or run, make sure to keep it clean. You’ll be able to get rid of old food and keep it from forming mold, keeping your chickens from getting sick.
